posted 05/22/2013 Braddock Road Youth Club Football Members,
I wanted to bring a couple of important notices to you as we get closer to the football season. First, Early Bird Registration is drawing to a close and will end June 3. We are extending it to give those who are playing Parkway Youth Flag Football an opportunity to register at the lower rate to coincide with our visit to the playoff games on June 2.
In addition, BRYC Football, through the partnership of the Fairfax County Youth Football League and USA Football, is about to be part of the Heads Up Football Program. This is a combined effort of the National Football League and USA Football to commit to safer football. Registration numbers are lower than at this same time last year. I expect part of this is the concern of the safety of this great sport. The NFL, along with USA Football, is aware that this is not just occurring in Northern Virginia but across the country. This this pilot, we wll all be working to make football a more positive youth experience and a much safer one as well. As you read below, you will see the committment that we all will be making to ensure a better, safer game for youth football. Many of the elements below are already in place and done by us, such as the coaches' certification through USA Football, equipment fitting and concussion awareness. Now there will be addied emphasis in keeping the head out of contact and each club will have a Player Safety Coach to help coordinate the drills and instruction to coaches on the new, safer methods for tackling and overall contact.
Please share this information with others who are considering letting their children play this great sport of football, but are unsure of the safety aspects. We are doiing more to make this a safer sport and create a great environment for the youth players.
MORE THAN 900 YOUTH LEAGUES COMMIT TO SAFER FOOTBALL THROUGH USA FOOTBALL’S HEADS UP FOOTBALL PROGRAM
Nationwide program launched with $1.5 million grant from the NFL Foundation
Former NFL players to serve as Heads Up Football Ambassadors
More than 900 youth football leagues across the United States representing more than 200,000 players and 30,000 coaches nationwide have committed to the health and safety of their young players by adopting Heads Up Football, a new USA Football pilot program for the 2013 season dedicated to making the game better and safer.
The Heads Up Football program promotes a positive youth football experience and advances player safety by providing coaching education and teaching resources that benefit players, parents and coaches. Heads Up Football aims to take the head out of the game.
USA Football is the official youth football development partner of the NFL and its 32 teams.
Heads Up Football is comprised of five primary elements:
| Heads Up Tackling |
· USA Football’s Heads Up Tackling technique, endorsed by medical and football experts, teaches players to keep their heads up and out of the line of contact. |
| Coaching certification |
· All coaches within a youth program are trained to teach the game’s fundamentals by completing USA Football’s nationally accredited Level 1 Coaching Certification Course. |
| Concussion recognition and response |
· Coaches learn and are assessed on CDC concussion recognition and response through USA Football’s Level 1 Coaching Certification Course.
· Coaches, parents and players are taught concussion-related protocols at the start of the season at a leaguewide clinic and have them reinforced throughout the season. |
| Player Safety Coach |
· Appointed by each participating Heads Up Football youth organization. This individual is trained by USA Football to implement Heads Up Football’s player safety protocols, including coaching certification, and conducts safety clinics for coaches, parents and players. |
| Equipment fitting |
· Coaches, parents and players are taught proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting. |
Youth coaches of participating leagues will be trained in Heads Up Football techniques before leading their teams this season. All head coaches and assistant coaches are required to complete USA Football’s accredited Level 1 Coaching Certification Course, which includes Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concussion recognition and response protocols; proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting; and Heads Up Tackling techniques, which aim to take the head out of the line of contact, and teach proper fundamentals.

posted 04/14/2013 Early Bird Registration Open until May 31
It's that exciting time again already when online registration opens for football and cheerleading. Early Bird registration opens April 15 and runs until May 31. That means $15 off the regular registration cost of $180 for football and $130 cheer registrations, along with discounts for multiple family members. There is a new age/weight matrix approved by the Fairfax County Youth Football League for this season, which adds 5 lbs to each weight class and age designation. The calendar will be updated shortly to add the walk-in registration and equipment distribution dates, along with other important dates. Stay tuned for these. Player evaluations will begin August 5.
Additionally, there will be improved safety practices that will be implemented this season through the USA Football/National Football League's Heads Up Football Program. More wil be forthcoming on this initiative. One of the important components is the role of he Player Safety Coach. Ideally we would like to have someone who is in a safety officer position at his/her place of employment who would not necessarily be a team coach. This person would help implement the Heads Up Program and provide coordination among assistant Player Safety Coaches to keep track of teams' implementation of the Heads Up techniques. I thank you in advance for considering helping us to bring this important program to FCYFL and BRYC and make the great game of football safer and more fun.
Thanks, too, for all of our loyal and supporting members as we prepare for another fun season of football coming soon.
Bob Fitzpatrick, Commissioner
Braddock Road Youth Club Football
